Andrey Babchynsky
Andrey Babchynsky is a Ukrainian artist and former architect, born in Odesa in 1980. His artistic practice is grounded in an enduring engagement with philosophical, societal, and political questions: how people construct meaning, how different systems of thought shape our perception of reality, and how individuals position themselves within larger historical and geopolitical forces.
Drawing on a long-standing interest in both Eastern and Western philosophical traditions, Babchynsky approaches painting as a space for inquiry rather than illustration. Philosophical ideas often enter his work indirectly—through metaphor, ambiguity, symbolic structures, shifts of perspective, and encounters between seemingly incompatible ways of understanding the world. His work does not seek to resolve these tensions so much as to make them perceptible.
Alongside these philosophical concerns, Babchynsky engages with contemporary social and geopolitical realities. His works frequently bring difficult or uncomfortable questions into view, asking the audience to confront rather than simply observe them. Personal experience, cultural memory, displacement, political transformation, and the contradictions of contemporary society coexist in a practice that moves between introspection and wider collective concerns.
Education & Architectural Practice
In 1997, Babchynsky entered the Faculty of Architecture at the Odesa State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture (OGASA). He received his Bachelor's degree in 2001 and completed his Master's degree in Architecture in 2003. Both graduation projects received top national state awards.
He began his professional architectural career in Odesa, making his interior-design debut in 2003 as the decorator of the Friends and Beer restaurant in the city centre. From 2004 to 2009, he worked at Beletage, one of Odesa's major architectural firms, where he developed around fifty residential and public projects. Five were realised, and one received an industry award.
Although architecture strongly shaped his understanding of space, proportion, structure, and materiality, his interests increasingly moved beyond the possibilities of commercial practice. In 2010, he left architecture entirely to devote himself to art.
Artistic Practice
Babchynsky began exhibiting in 2008, participating in solo and group exhibitions and art festivals. In 2010–2011, his paintings were sold at seven consecutive art auctions, including Kyiv's Golden Section auction house and auction venues in Odesa.
Travel and prolonged encounters with other cultural and philosophical traditions have played an important role in the development of his practice. In 2012, he lived and worked in Tamil Nadu, India. Following his return to Ukraine, he deliberately moved away from pursuing a conventional institutional art career, while continuing to exhibit and sell his work independently.
A second extended period in India in 2017 became the basis for Microbharata, an artist's book conceived, created, and published by Babchynsky in a limited edition of 500 copies. The project reflects his sustained engagement with India not simply as a place of travel, but as a different intellectual and perceptual landscape through which questions of culture, philosophy, everyday life, and representation could be reconsidered.
Since 2022, Babchynsky has lived and worked across France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Guatemala. These years of movement and displacement have further informed his attention to questions of belonging, political reality, cultural difference, and the instability of seemingly fixed perspectives. During this period, he concentrated primarily on studio practice and direct relationships with collectors, intentionally maintaining a more selective public exhibition schedule.
Since 2024, he has been based in Italy, where he continues his artistic practice.
Babchynsky has created more than 400 artworks, many of which are now held in museum collections in Ukraine and in private collections across Europe, the United States, Asia, and other parts of the world.
